The First Sunderland Comic Con Festival

The first Sunderland Comic Con, The North East Comic Book Festival will take place on August 9-10 2014. This new event, taking place at Sunderland Software Centre will see comic book writers, artists and creators attend from all over Britain, making the North East the focus for comic books, whilst it is expected that thousands of fans will attend from across the region and beyond.

The event is being produced in partnership between Sunderland Live and Black Hearted Press, who already produce the popular Glasgow Comic Con which sees over 2000 visitors attend.

Award winning graphic novel creator and one of the event patrons Bryan Talbot said: “It’s incredible for us to be having an event like this in my back yard, not only bringing internationally famous comic writers and artists to Sunderland but also shining a light on the many new talented creators in the area.”

Jessica Regnart, Creative Development Manager at Sunderland Live said: “It’s fantastic to have such a creative and unique event come to Sunderland”

“We’re delighted to be working with Black Hearted Press to bring this event to the region for the first time and we are expecting it to be really popular.”

Black Hearted Press have already made waves in Scotland by producing Glasgow’s Comic Con, Scotland’s number one comic book festival. The event producers said: “We have established Glasgow Comic Con as the top comic book event in Scotland and one of the top five in the UK, focussing on the creators of comic books and the art and literature they create. Our ethos is simple- to develop and enhance readers’ experience with the event and we hope to bring colour, fun and a new date in the diary for Sunderland’s cultural ambassadors”.

Further to the many talks, panels, signings and sketches that will take place, some of the UK’s leading independent comic book publishers will be on hand, including a host of small press exhibitors, comic book shops, toy shops and many more exhibitors, as well as the always popular COSPLAY competitions and photo opportunities.
